After stealing the spotlight at Apple’s 2023 product showcase, the multi-billion dollar corporation has officially announced the launch date for the Apple Vision Pro headset, an innovative device that the firm touts as “the first step in the era of spatial computing”.

The Apple Vision Pro is not your typical virtual reality headset and is more aptly defined as an ‘interface for your eyes’, that seemingly covers the same functions as your other Apple devices, although with seamless optimisation that’s accessible through voice, motion and sight.

The Apple Vision Pro differs from competitors such as the Oculus Rift and other VR headsets, through a literally transparent approach to digital reality that blends the Apple home-screen with the users’ physical surroundings.

Core applications like Photos, FaceTime, Safari and Music are all accessible through Vision OS - Apple’s “first ever spatial operating system”. Rather than using a mouse, the Vision OS system is navigated by simply moving your eyes, waving your hands and/ or vocal commands.

Apple also revealed that the device features a three-dimensional camera that allows users to capture photos and videos with life-like quality and depth.

When it comes to entertainment, the Apple Vision Pro removes the need for screens altogether and is equally, if not more immersive than watching a film at the cinema, providing the option to make your personal screen feel “100ft wide” while experiencing an environment similar to that on your screen.

Vision Pro can also be used to play games via Apple Arcade and will pair seamlessly with PlayStation and Xbox controllers.

Despite so much micro-engineering and groundbreaking technology, the Vision Pro is remarkably compact and is even marketed by Apple as a “mobile device” that can be charged on-the-go through a pocket-sized battery. The device simply wraps around the head and is fitted with a mouldable frame and 3D-knitted headband.

The Apple Vision Pro will start at $3,499 and is available for pre-order from January 19th at 05:00 am PT.

A wider release follows on February 2nd.
