Balenciaga has gone into business with SEGA, and the collection is already live — just not where most people are looking. The BALENCIAGA | SEGA capsule, timed to Tokyo Game Show, went on sale in Japan on September 15 and is selling on Balenciaga's Japanese site right now. Everyone else waits until September 22, when the brand takes it to selected stores worldwide.

Eight SEGA-branded pieces are listed on the Japanese store, and the pricing is exactly as unbothered as you'd expect. Caps open the range at ¥69,000, rising to ¥83,000 for the Sonic version. Oversized tees run ¥116,000 plain SEGA and ¥122,000 with Sonic, with the long-sleeve versions at ¥135,000 and ¥142,000. The zip-up hoodie is ¥256,000. Topping it is the Sonic the Hedgehog varsity jacket at ¥532,000 — which, at the time of writing, isn't even buyable: its product page offers a notify-me button rather than a cart.

The artwork is the whole point. The Sonic tee carries a print Balenciaga's own product copy calls "Sonic hologram world" — a neon-grid, palm-tree, Eiffel-Tower-at-dusk composition with a ghosted blue Sonic mid-stride beside a cracked arcade cabinet, under a co-branded BALENCIAGA SEGA lockup. It's black dry jersey, 100% cotton, with Balenciaga logo embroidery at the chest, made in Portugal, and an NFC chip inside for the brand's Digital Product Card. Order it in Japan today and the site quotes delivery between September 18 and 23.

Reporting around the launch has the varsity jacket and the long-sleeve tee as Japan-exclusive, with the caps, tees and hoodies forming the wider international assortment — so the most expensive thing here may also be the hardest to get outside Tokyo. Balenciaga has also filled its Aoyama flagship with two vintage SEGA Blast City arcade cabinets, one of them running a playable Sonic the Fighters.

For now, the US site knows nothing about any of it: a search for "sonic" on Balenciaga's American storefront returns no results, and the English-language collection page hasn't been switched on. If you're outside Japan, September 22 is the date to watch — and Balenciaga hasn't published non-Japanese pricing yet.
