New Balance’s self-started global holiday is finally upon us and in celebration of Grey Day, the masters of monotony are readying eight commemorative styles over two separate packs to honour the Boston brand’s domination of the colour that goes with everything.

A staple of New Balance culture since 2018, Grey Day is still very much in its infancy, although that doesn’t stop New Balance capitalising on the celebration by releasing a multitude of storied sneakers every year, allowing its loyal fans a fair shake at obtaining their desired pair, in an ecosystem that combats hype culture through hand-crafted constructions, transparent communication and no-nonsense colourways.

Starting off with the Moon Daze collection, New Balance looks to shed light on zeitgeisty silhouettes by dressing the MT580, 550, 9060 and More Trail runner in soft silvery tones, finished with blue accents and subtle patina to explore the idea of shoes that have seen wear on the moon’s surface - hence the name and subtle, almost frosted detailing seen across the quintet of kicks.

The second group of commemorative releases purely focuses on Made in the U.S.A silhouettes, again featuring uniformity across the 996, 998, 990v4 and 990v6.

These shoes represent the timeless essence of New Balance, as the 996 debuted all the way back in 1988, followed by the 998 in ‘93, finally fast-forwarding to the 21st century with the 990v4 & v6. Each of the designs stick to the same, hairy suede grey uppers with navy tabs, pale mesh and yellowed midsoles.

The sheer fact that New Balance is able to paint a collection of running shoes that span 35 years of production - all in the same colour palette, is testament to the brand’s perennity and with the patriotic set of 2023 releases, Grey Day is firmly cementing itself as a respected sneaker holiday.

The New Balance Grey Day collection is available today, Friday May 12th from New Balance and select retailers worldwide.
