Nike’s Air Max Phenomena is the Latest Addition to the “Snoafer” Trend

Nike is fulfilling the inevitable by hopping on the loafer trend with its all-new Air Max Phenomena SWDC.

The hybridisation of classic upper footwear construction with contemporary sportstyle DNA has been a hot topic in the sneaker world since January 2024, when Junya Watanabe first revealed his exclusive set of New Balance 1906L loafers.

While brands like Converse and Vans have thrown their hats in the ring with faithful “Snoafer” interpretations that still air on the side of formality, it seems that only Hoka has come close to rivalling the cultural buzz of New Balance’s “final boss of dad shoes” with its leather Speed Loafer that dropped in mid-January.

That was until last week, when Atmos Creative Director Hirofumi Kojima gave a world-first glimpse at the Air Max Phenomena SWDC loafer.

Arriving courtesy of Nike’s Serena Williams Design Crew — a creative division at the Swoosh dedicated to honouring the legacy of its star athlete and tennis GWOAT — the Air Max Phenomena Loafer fuses the best parts of traditional footwear and futuristic Air Max energy, utilising the Air Max SNDR’s sole unit as the scaffolding for tumbled leather uppers, separated by reflective mudguards.

Nike improves on the “slip-on, slip-off” functionality of the loafer with extra padding at the heel, while the front strap acts as the perfect spot for mini Swoosh placements.

First revealed in a “Triple Black” colour scheme, a second “Pearl Pink” iteration has since surfaced, showing white leather uppers mixed with a shiny purple mudguard. Official product shots from Nike also confirm the “SWDC” logo features on the insoles and pull tabs, with “305” added as a nod to Serena Williams’ adopted home of Miami, Florida.

Retailing at $155 USD, the Nike Air Max Phenomena will first release in Japan in the coming weeks.

A global release date is yet to be announced.
