Cult streetwear firm WTAPS has played host to two of the most sought after New Balance collaborations ever to release and after an underwhelming 990v6 release this time last year, the collaborative duo looks to recapture cult status with a fresh take on the New Balance 998.
After tackling heritage models like the 992 and 990v2, WTAPS has since shifted to new age designs like the 990v6 and now, the updated version of New Balance 998.
Although it first released in 1993, the (new) New Balance 998 has experienced a great resurgence over the past year, starting with a remodelled re-release in mid 2023 that paved the way for 998 to feature in nostalgic collabs with Kith and Concepts, before playing an important role in New Balance’s seasonal Made in USA campaigns throughout 2024.
The aforementioned partnerships reaffirmed the 998’s desirability outside of hardcore New Balance aficionados, so it’s only right that another hall of fame collaborator sets its touch upon the design.
WTAPS has decided to adhere to the central pillar of New Balance DNA by painting the 998’s pig suede and mesh construction in various shades of drab grey, where flashes of navy and charcoal add depth to the palette, topping things off with printed heel counters that showcases WTAPS’ military-inspired, “standard issue” approach to branding.
The WTAPS x New Balance 998 comes with a price tag of $300 USD and will be available to purchase for via raffle entry on WTAPS’ website from Friday, November 8th.
